CORE PRINCIPLES · WOUND HEALING
In an experimental mouse skin-wound model, early depletion of one cell population reduces vascularised granulation tissue and impairs epithelialisation. Which cell best fits this role?
Best answer: macrophages.
Macrophages help coordinate the shift from inflammation to repair. In this mouse experiment, removing them during the early phase reduced vascularised granulation tissue and impaired epithelialisation.
The useful distinction: the effect depends on timing. No statistically significant repair effect was detected after late-phase depletion in that model. This does not establish a treatment rule for a human wound.
