Look at the horizon, clipped highlights and readable light range. An uncertainty band means the number is an estimate, not an exact value.

See which highlights are already clipped in the preview. Clipping cannot reveal how much detail exists beyond that limit.

Save a scene — a catalogue product, a room, a before-and-after. Next time a reference overlay and five channels guide you back: horizon, tilt, light, white balance and zoom each say matched, how far off, or can’t measure. Scenes are part of Scrim Pro; the free version keeps one.
Preview measurements have limits. Scrim does not measure calibrated incident lux, set ISO/shutter/aperture, or recover clipped image detail. It complements your camera workflow.
Before you buy
Is this an exposure calculator for film?
No. Scrim evaluates the phone's processed preview and motion readings. It does not supply calibrated incident-light exposure settings for a film camera. If you need a dedicated light meter reading or automatic shutter/aperture recommendations, this is a different tool.
Does the HDR delivery view inspect my photos?
No. It is a comparison based on a gain ratio you choose and example display capacities. It illustrates how those assumptions change highlight headroom. It does not import a photo, read its gain map, or measure the recipient's display.
Can the Watch measure without the phone?
No. The camera measurement comes from your iPhone. Open Scrim on the phone and keep the paired Watch connected. The Watch shows the decision; it is not a camera preview or shutter remote.
Are my photos uploaded or stored?
For live camera measurement, Scrim does not upload preview frames. It keeps a single reference frame on this device only when you save a scene. It has no account, ads or analytics. Measurement results and framing guidance can be sent to your paired Apple Watch. Local settings and review-request timing are stored on your device. See the privacy policy for details.
Only your selected photo is imported. The system may download a selected iCloud file; editing stays on this device. Studio keeps selected originals, edit recipes and created files in private app storage. Originals are not overwritten. Scrim does not upload these photos. Device backups may include private app files; you choose which copies to share. New SDR files use sRGB. New exports do not copy source location or private metadata; your original keeps its metadata. Transparent JPEG areas become white. Sharing starts only when you choose Share. An original saved or shared through import recovery can still contain location, EXIF or other private metadata; the warning appears before sharing. These Studio notes apply to version 1.6.0 or later; version 1.5.5 does not include Studio.
What is free, and what does Scrim Pro add?
From version 1.5, Scrim is free to download. Frame and Light stay free, and the free version keeps one scene. Scrim Pro adds unlimited scenes, projects, scene sheets, Verticals and HDR Delivery.
Scrim Pro is an auto-renewing subscription: $3.99 a month or $24.99 a year, and the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for eligible new subscribers. These are US prices; the App Store shows your local price before you confirm. Manage or cancel it in Settings under your Apple Account. If you bought Scrim before Pro, Verticals and Delivery stay yours. See purchase and restore help.
What if I declined Camera access?
Enable Camera for Scrim in your device's Settings, then reopen Scrim. If the preview or a reading still does not appear, contact support with your device model, OS version and the step that failed.
