The anchor alarm that can prove it was watching

Apple Watch · English · Deutsch · Türkçe · 日本語

Every anchor alarm shares one silent failure: it can lose the GPS fix, be suspended by the system, or quietly stop — and you find out in the morning, if at all. Rodewatch is built around that problem.

An anchor watch “may stop functioning correctly without one becoming aware of it, may temporarily lose GPS signal, or may even be terminated.” — from an independent feature survey of 50+ anchor alarm apps

That sentence is the category describing its own worst flaw. Every app in it can fail without saying so. Rodewatch is the one that counts how long it failed and shows you in the morning.

The Night Report

Disarm at breakfast and Rodewatch shows the night it actually kept:

The morning question is “did we drag, or did the GPS wander?” Until now no anchor app could answer it, because none of them remembered the night.

The recorder cannot touch the alarm

The Night Report is architecturally separate from the alarm engine, and the build fails if the engine ever learns the recorder exists. A full log, a rejected fix or a thinning pass cannot change what the alarm decides.

That is not a style preference. The alarm is a safety path, and nothing was allowed to sit between it and your wrist — including a feature we wanted to sell.

The alarm is a safety feature. Putting a safety feature behind a paywall is a decision we were not willing to make, so we didn’t.

Private by default

The anchor alarm, swing map, race timer and man-overboard never use the network. There is no HTTP client of our own, no analytics, no third-party SDK, no AIS or fleet-tracking feature, no account and no sign-in. Nothing leaves the watch on its own.

The one exception is a switch you have to turn on: the wind forecast (version 1.7). When it is on and the app is open, the watch asks Apple Weather for the forecast at your position — at most once an hour. The request goes to Apple, never to us; your track and anchor position are not sent.

Honest limits

Rodewatch is an aid to good seamanship, not a substitute for it, and not a navigation, distress or rescue system. Always keep a proper watch and carry the safety equipment your waters require.

Overnight anchor watch runs continuous GPS and draws battery like a workout session does. Top up before a long night. If the watch dies, the watch dies — and the Night Report will show you exactly when it stopped, which is the point.
