Assay — Support

Why does it show a range instead of a number?

Because the number is not known to the precision a single figure implies. The fat under the plate, the portion under the rice and the sugar in the sauce are all invisible in a photo. Showing "412 kcal" would be presenting a guess as a measurement.

Why did it say it cannot tell them apart?

Because the candidates it was weighing differ too much in energy for one answer to be honest. Confusing a risotto with a pilaf barely moves the number, so Assay just answers. Confusing a salad with a lasagne moves it by a factor of five, so it names both and asks you. Tap the one you ate and the estimate narrows immediately.

The band on my day looks wide. Can I narrow it?

Yes, and the app tells you which part to attack. If the note under your daily total says the range is mostly systematic, the largest win is confirming what each meal was. If it says mostly random, entering grams for your biggest meal helps most — a number you type carries a ±5% band instead of the portion table's ±25–30%.

"This pace comes from a table, not from you"

Assay has not measured how much energy you burn per minute of your chosen activity, so it is using a published MET value scaled by your body mass. That value is right for an average person and systematically wrong for a specific one. Open Settings and enter your own kcal/min if you know it, and the label changes.

Why is my goal date a range, and why is it so wide?

Two reasons, and both are shown. Your daily balance carries its own band, and the 7700 kcal-per-kilogram figure is a 1958 convention that has been criticised — Assay uses it but carries its ±12% into the result rather than treating it as a law. The widest single input is usually your daily burn: if it says it came from a table, entering your own maintenance calories narrows the whole screen.

Does it work without photos?

Completely. Choose a food from the list by hand; the estimate is built the same way. Camera and photo access are optional.

Nothing is syncing between my devices

That is by design. Assay has no server and makes no network requests, so there is nothing to sync with. Your log lives on the device it was entered on.
